Breed Profile —Golden Retriever
Golden Retrievers are best known for their lovely long-haired coat, gentle nature, kind temperament and loyalty to their people.
Natural athletes, they love retrieving and swimming, which come instinctively from their origins as retrievers of waterfowl for hunters.
They are very intelligent dogs, smart enough to learn anything you teach them, and lots that you don't.
They quickly master their training and then proceed to devise ways to outwit you. ’Too smart for their own good’. Definitely too smart for their humans' good.
If they decide not to do what you ask, they love to play dumb with a goofy smile and a blank, witless look on their faces.
They splash through all mud puddles on principle, climb into any available lap (despite their 60 or so pounds), run like the wind, and in the end they can always win a smile or a laugh from their despairing owners.
When your tired Golden lies down and gazes at you with that sweet, serious look, you'll probably wonder where that crazy dog went that was just running and barking and splashing here and there with such intense energy. Don't worry, he'll be back after a short nap.

Ode to Ziva
The Golden Retriever's a goof,
And Ziva the dog is my proof.
She'll run up a ladder
As swift as an adder
And perch like a bird on the roof.
The limerick above and the cartoon at right were inspired by an email sent to us from bigkid, A Dog Like You Member.
On a recent winter day, he called his Golden Retriever, Ziva, and she didn't come, an unusual thing for Ziva.
After searching the yard and scouring the neighborhood, bigkid was all set to phone Animal Control in case they had picked up the dog, when a "Woof" from above gave him a clue at last.
Ziva was on the roof. A self-taught ladder climber, Ziva had made use of a ladder propped against the wall, evidently just to enjoy the view and chat with a squirrel friend.
