At 13 to 20 pounds, the West Highland White Terrier is a compact little bundle of energy and affection. Westies are friendly, people-oriented dogs who tend to be happy, devoted and faithful companions.
Their double coat consists of a soft undercoat and a rough, 2 inch long, overcoat. They don't shed a lot, but they do require almost daily grooming.
Because they were bred in Scotland to root out vermin, Westies, like most terriers, tend to be diggers. It's hard to combat such strong instinct, but they can be happy given their own restricted place where digging is allowed.
The self-confident Westie possesses great spunk and determination, and the breed loves to get attention, but don't expect a Westie to be a cuddly lapdog. Some can be, but most are too independent to be held close for very long.
A smart, energetic little dog, the Westie doesn't require a lot of exercise, but they need lots of attention and stimulation that comes from human companionship.
